Honda’s evolutionary redesign of the CR-V retains this popular compact SUV’s focus on functionality. We like that the ride comfort has improved, the controls are easier to use, and that the hybrid version gets the same excellent 35 mpg overall as the previous model—even while gaining size and weight in the transformation. Besides the 9-mpg advantage the CR-V Hybrid boasts over the conventional model, we also prefer its more pleasant and predictable powertrain. Add in the CR-V Hybrid’s reasonably comfortable ride, secure handling, and generous cabin space, and this is one of the best small SUVs you can buy. The loud cabin is one of the vehicle’s few demerits.

Honda completely redesigned the CR-V for 2023 and added new standard safety features, more comfort, and improved fuel efficiency. Along with more dynamic styling and an improved all-wheel-drive system, the automaker added a stronger hybrid powertrain. The turbocharged gasoline-only engine option received only minor tweaks. Some of the popular SUVs improvements come as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety continues to beef up its crash test standards. The CR-V features an updated body structure designed to better deflect crash energy and improve occupant protection during a variety of different types of collisions, as well as more airbags and more standard active safety and driver assistance features, including a driver attention monitoring system and a rear seat reminder.
The CR-V is one of the better models among small SUVs, thanks to its roomy cabin, good fuel economy, competent handling and standard safety features. For 2020, a hybrid version is added and gets a splendid 35 mpg overall. The non-hybrid version comes with a 190-hp, 1.5-liter turbo, which provides ample power even at low to mid revs. The continuously variable transmission is largely unobtrusive. Fuel economy is impressive at 28 mpg overall for the standard CR-V. Handling is nimble and sure-footed. The ride has a firm edge and more so with the hybrid. Road noise is well-suppressed, and the cabin is reasonably quiet. The interior is very roomy, particularly the rear seat, and access is easy. Note that the seats in the base versions are less supportive. Higher trims get a standard 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Honda's suite of advanced safety features is standard.
